Our stay in the Blue Mountains has a soundtrack of cicadas. While there are some every year, every seven years there is a particularly large number. The noise is present almost everywhere and all the time, seems to come from everywhere, is extremely loud and has a sort of pulse.
We started the day by going to Hargrave's lookout which is on one of the ridges we can see from the hotel and similarly looks out over the Megalong Valley.
From there we drove back to the main ridge that the road and railway run along, and down the other side to Govett's Leap, a lookout next to Bridal Valley Falls looking out over Grose Valley.
Continuing the lookout theme we then drove further west to Perry's Lookdown on the edge of the same valley.
By then we needed a change, so we went back into Blackheath to have a look around and a light lunch. Finally we went to the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens. As it's spring there are flowers throughout the mountains, but the gardens were very impressive. The flowering bushes and trees fill a small valley and merge with the native plants.
We went back to the hotel, having seen enough for the day.
